Making Watersheds More Resilient

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem spans 22 million acres across three states and contains all or portions of six major watersheds. These watersheds are home to diverse habitats, iconic wildlife, and thriving communities.

The ecosystem’s watersheds – and the cold, clean waters that make up the foundation of life within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem – are changing. As the impacts of climate change unfurl across the region, Greater Yellowstone’s natural resources as we know them are under threat. Warmer winters, hotter summers, earlier runoff, and changes in precipitation are among the challenges in store for our watersheds, communities, and wildlife.

The Greater Yellowstone Coalition is committed to contributing to our collective understanding of how climate change is impacting – and will continue to impact – the ecosystem. And because we know that climate solutions will only be durable and sustainable if they incorporate the knowledge and lived experiences of diverse communities within Greater Yellowstone, we are hard at work alongside our partners building a base of scientific and community-based knowledge and preparing to tackle this challenge, together.
