special projects intern

The Greater Yellowstone Coalition (GYC) is seeking a Special Projects Intern. The Special Projects Intern is primarily responsible for assisting the GYC on a two part project focused on the intersection of conservation and recreation in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE).  Over the past decade, outdoor recreation has become an important part of the local economy and an increasingly significant factor in land and resource management decisions.  As the level of use and number of uses has expanded, so too has the conflict between user groups, recreationists and land managers, and at times, conservation interests and outdoor enthusiasts.  In order to more effectively address the issues associated with recreation and resource conservation, GYC seeks to inventory, map and produce a brief report that depicts the current “state of outdoor recreation” in the GYE.  Today, this information does not exist in one place, and thus needs to be gathered from multiple sources, including public land management agencies, outfitters and guides, local recreation managers and others.

The second part of this project involves working with GYC staff and key partners to help plan and convene a scientific conference or symposium on the topic of outdoor recreation and conservation.  Event planning and logistics, agenda development, selecting speakers and topics, and otherwise working with a small team to support and facilitate a productive and successful gathering will be important responsibilities of the Special Projects Intern.  This project will account for a significant portion of the Intern’s duties and responsibilities, however other tasks related to various aspects of GYC’s conservation programs may be assigned as needed.
