  • Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest: This 3.3 million acre forest is Montana's largest, encompassing eight different counties in the southwest part of the state and straddling the Continental Divide. The Beaverhead-Deerlodge includes almost 1 million acres of inventoried roadless lands plus two protected Wilderness areas: the Lee Metcalf and Anaconda-Pintler.  Home to bears, wolves, wolverine and elk, this forest is critical to keeping Greater Yellowstone connected to other large wildland ecosystems in Idaho and Northwest Montana.  GYC's work: The Forest Jobs and Recreation Act, grizzly bear and wolf management, travel management, and forest restoration.
  • Custer: A portion of this 1.3-million-acre Montana forest includes the 346,000-acre Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area in the northeast corner of Greater Yellowstone. Ranger district: Beartooth. Highlights: Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, Beartooth Highway. GYC’s work: Protection of the fragile alpine tundra on the Beartooth Plateau and halting of the New World Mine just outside of Yellowstone in the mid-1990s.
  • Gallatin: Montana’s 1.8-million-acre Gallatin is a critical component of northern Greater Yellowstone. It provides habitat for all of Yellowstone’s iconic species. Ranger districts: Bozeman, Big Timber, Gardiner, Hebgen Lake (West Yellowstone), Livingston. Highlights: Six major mountain ranges, Absaroka-Beartooth and Lee Metcalf wilderness areas, Madison, Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers, Quake and Hebgen lakes. GYC’s work: Madison Valley Ranchlands Group, wolf/livestock mitigation, Bison Without Borders, Gallatin Travel Plan.
